In a fit of literary and Latinate heroism, I once coined a personal motto, Potest veritas se defendere (“Truth can defend itself”). Not long after that, someone raised Pilate’s infamous question to Christ, “Quid est veritas? What is truth?” and asked for help in responding to arguments against truth in favor of relativism. Cardinal Ratzinger, in The Nature and Mission of Theology (San Francisco: Ignatius Press, 1995, p. 39) notes that “the depressing thing about Pilate’s question is that it is not really a question at all but an answer.” Pilate may have expected no answer, but can we?
