Shareholders in Him…

[1:7] …God did not give us a spirit of timidity but a spirit of power and love and self-control.
[8] Do not be ashamed then of testifying to our Lord, nor of me his prisoner, but share in suffering for the gospel in the power of God,
[9] who saved us and called us with a holy calling, not in virtue of our works but in virtue of his own purpose and the grace which he gave us in Christ Jesus ages ago,
[10] and now has manifested through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.

To be a Christian is to be a shareholder in the sufferings of Christ.

To be a Christian is to be a co-worker with other Christians in learning how to suffer with each other, and all those woven into our lives, in the name of Love Incarnate.

To be in the Church is to learn to hold each other as we learn to be held by and in the suffering love of Jesus. We literally learn to share holding Him.

To be a saint, in turn, is to be an investor of those sufferings in the lives of others, that their grief may be transmuted into His joy, that their weakness may be transfigured into His strength, that their faith may be transformed into His wisdom.
