Chinese PM says US Should 'Honor its Promises' on Taiwan (VOA News - 04 Aug 2004, 13:47 UTC)
Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao has told a visiting U.S. Senate delegation that Washington should "honor its promises" on Taiwan and handle the issue cautiously.
Chinese state-run media said Mr. Wen made the remarks to U.S. Senator Ted Stevens in Beijing. The reports did not elaborate on what Mr. Wen meant.
Earlier, Mr. Stevens said Beijing had again asked for the repeal of a U.S. law requiring Washington to supply Taiwan with defensive weapons. But he said the United States maintains its position that Taiwan must be able to defend itself from a military attack.
The United States has no official ties with Taiwan, but is the island's main arms supplier and military protector.
